Mary M. Schmidt (Popenfus), 76, of Tomah died Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at her sons home in the Town of Tomah. She was born August 13, 1935. Mary was united in marriage to Carlton J. Schmidt on December 29, 1956 at St. Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He preceded her in death September 28, 2010. Mary worked as a waitress for several restaurants in the area, including, the Sherman Hotel, Jermoos in Oakdale, the Badger Café and Ted’s Café. Mary and Carlton owned and operated the Air view Café for several years in Tomah. She retired after working several years at the Bandbox Cleaners. She enjoyed playing bingo, going to yard sale and thrift sales. Mary was a cat lover and had a special companion “Mickey”. She enjoyed taking care of a large garden, cooking and canning. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s and a member of the PCCW. She loved to Polka and put together jigsaw puzzles with her grandchildren. Mary was a quiet, loving person and had a fun sense of humor. She is survived by her children, Judy Haley of Lindenhurst, IL, Timothy (Polly) of Greenville, Kathleen (Elides) Tarrago of Lake Worth, FL, Margaret Neidermann, Thomas (Rae Ann) all of Tomah, James (Melissa), of East Bethal, MN, 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, many relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Carlton, and a son Michael A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, June 8, 2012, 10:30 A.M. at St. Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church 303 W. Monroe, Tomah. Msgr Richard Gilles will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday at St. Mary Immaculate Conception Catholic Church from 9:30 A.Ml until the time of the service.
